IT Outsourcing ( Maximize Flexibility and Control)

In this article is all tackling about how to maximize flexibility and control in IT outsourcing and which parts of information technology function should be outsource and which should be kept in-house and does the IT operation provide a strategic advantage or is it a commodity that does not differentiate from competitors. From the authors who conduct research and study in 40 US and European companies that had grappled with the issue of outsourcing IT, their conclusion is that the strategic versus commodity approach usually led to disappointments, because many managers place big bets about their markets, future technologies and suppliers capabilities and motives with a great certainty even if they cant, and many mangers also sign five or ten years contracts without considering that they often cannot predict how business conditions and technologies will change in even two years.

So what happen is, if the operation is a core strategic, they kept in house but if it is a commodity especially one that suppliers claim to be able to provide for less money that the company's IT department can they turn to outsource it. So they turn to outside providers to gain access to the best technology at a low price without taking into an account a providers need to maximize profit. So managers should not make a one time decision whether to outsource or not so that it can maximize flexibility and control so that it can pursue different options as it learns more as it circumstances change. For me its better that the companies should pursue short- term outsourcing contracts whenever they can because its one way for a company to maintain control over a supplier and once the company has decided which services or systems to outsource make sure that the suppliers provide the services they are obligated to provide and that all users reasonable needs are satisfied.
